Northern Tails - Sept 16

A Day in the Life of a Kenel Worker At Manchester Dogs’ Home we pride ourselves in giving every dog a chance, but we wouldn’t be anywhere without our amazing staff and volunteers that work hard every day to make this a reality. We spoke to Jodie Pilling, a Kennel Worker at Manchester Dogs’ Home, about a typical day at the home… 8.30am: The working day starts at 8.30am where the dogs are given their breakfast and medication. They are very happy to see us and even happier when they see food on the way! 9am: After breakfast at 9am, the cleaning starts in the kennels. Each kennel is given a full deepclean, scrubbed with disinfectant and rinsed off with water. We also change all the water bowls now, as well as replacing chewed up toys and laying out clean blankets. 9.30am: Then the volunteer dog walkers usually arrive! And before lunch, my job is to get all the dogs that need walkies out and about. We rely massively on our team of volunteers and we always need more. It means so much for every dog to have a break from the kennels, a change of scenery and time to stretch their little legs and burn off some energy. They are usually brought back before our lunch hour at 12pm, or after if they need a longer walk. 11.30am: The cleaning is finished around 11.30am and all the dirty blankets and bowls are taken to the laundry room and cook house to be washed and used again. I also prepare the clean blankets to be put in the kennels that night with our furry friends! F E A T U R E cleaning volunteers washing 1 4 N O RT H E R N TA I L S S U M M E R 2 0 1 6
