What’s it like, volunteering at Manchester Dogs’ Home? I went today to look at a volunteer job at Manchester Dogs’ Home. When I got there a member of staff showed me round and told me what jobs had to be done - walking dogs, brushing them down, washing bowls and also washing the dogs’ bedding. There are six different places to look after: the kennels, pet cemetery, washroom, pot washing room, office and reception. The lady who showed me round has been a volunteer for ten years. She told me I would have to take an induction so on Tuesday I went for an introduction to their work and learned all about the dogs’ home, and what policies they have. Then she took all the volunteers round the area to look at everything again just to remind us. I stayed behind to walk the dogs and brush them down and after that I did pot washing. I went on Wednesday this week and walked two dogs, which I enjoyed. Then we did a lot of potwashing and also went to the washing machines and put a lot of blankets in for the wash. I also put other blankets for drying and then folding up as well. After that I had finished for the day and the staff where very happy with what I had done. David Chilton For Beautiful Sid I got a job at the dogs’ home With thoughts of adopting a dog of my own Something cute and cuddly it had to be Never realising that a certain breed of dog would choose me This canine companion had been cursed As the media had done its worst Vicious, unpredictable and snappy If I owned one of them I would never be happy A breed over bred it has to be said So to want one of them I must be off my head Ignoring all the criticisms I would decide for myself Rather than leave this poor dog on the shelf What I discovered without a doubt Was a dog so loving and loyal with character clout Along with a tail that never stops wagging And a zest for life that is never flagging You may ask what dog I am on about It’s the one that makes dog owning all worthwhile It’s the one that owns the Staffie smile!
