SHE’S GOT THE BEAT Dogs’ Home resident graduate s as new police star She may be named after the goddess of love but recent Manchester Dog’s Home resident Venus is one tough cookie. The plucky Belgian Shepherd Malinois who was found wandering the streets has now joined the Merseyside Constabulary as a fully-fledged police dog. “She was only 12 months old when we got her from the Home,” said her handler Constable Marc Williams, “the perfect age for police training. I’d been in the police for 11 years and I’d always wanted to do dog handling so when Venus came along, it was the perfect match.” Venus passed her 13-week police training course with flying colours and will now play a critical role searching for, tracking and detaining offenders around Merseyside. With her super-keen sense of smell, she has also been trained to detect crushed grass and disturbed soil to help with criminal investigations. “She’s such a lovely dog,” said Marc. “She’s alert and bright and has the perfect temperament for police work. I’m looking forward to a long and successful partnership with Venus.” Manchester Day Parade We took part in the Manchester Day Parade in June, helping to celebrate all that is Manchester and Manchester life - including its canine residents! The theme this year was Eureka! (everything from mad scientists to space travel) and Parade artists designed and built our amazing Space Dog float. Members of staff and volunteers all got into the spirit by dressing up as astronauts or dogs to raise awareness of Manchester Dogs’ Home. It was a fantastic day, thoroughly enjoyed by everyone who took part. We are all already looking forward to next year! N O R T H E R N TA I L S S U M M E R 2 0 1 6 5
